“I did not have a big restaurant or huge capital when I started. All I had was my kitchen, my passion for cooking, and the belief that I could build something for myself.”
My name is Sharon Tokiti, founder of Tokiti’s Kitchen.
Like many young people, I reached a point where I had to ask myself difficult questions about life, opportunities, and the future I wanted for myself. Instead of waiting for things to happen, I decided to start with what I already had — my cooking skills.
At first, it was just small orders from friends and people around me. Some days were slow. Some people doubted whether a home-based food business could really grow. But I kept going.
I focused on consistency, quality, and making sure every customer enjoyed what I prepared. Slowly, people started noticing my work. One customer became two. Two became many more.
Today, Tokiti’s Kitchen serves customers around Kiambu and Nairobi with snacks, breakfast meals, and catering services. Seeing people support something I started from my own kitchen still feels unbelievable sometimes.
The journey has not been easy, but it has taught me that you do not always need perfect conditions to begin. Sometimes you just need to take the first step with whatever you have.
I hope my story inspires another young person out there who feels afraid to start small.
