CATHOLIC LEADERSHIP: Vatican confirms Rev. Fr. John Mbua Mwandi as new Bishop of Kitui Diocese
The Vatican has officially appointed Rev. Fr. John Mbua Mwandi as the new Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kitui, bringing an end to days of speculation among Catholic faithful in Kenya.
The appointment was confirmed by the Holy See and communicated through the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), with church leaders in Kitui describing the move as a major moment for the diocese.
Before his appointment, Bishop-elect Mwandi was serving as parish priest at Mulutu Parish in Kitui County and had previously held several senior leadership positions within the diocese, including Vicar General and diocesan bursar.
Excitement and confusion had spread across Catholic circles earlier in the week after reports about the appointment surfaced online before official confirmation from the Vatican.
The announcement was later formally confirmed during a church leaders’ meeting at the Kitui Cathedral by Bishop Joseph Mwongela, the Apostolic Administrator of Kitui and current Coadjutor Bishop of Machakos.
Faithful in Kitui reportedly welcomed the news with celebrations, viewing Mwandi as a leader deeply familiar with the spiritual and social challenges facing the region.
A Bishop Rooted in Service
Born in 1970, Mwandi studied philosophy and theology in Kenyan seminaries before being ordained as a priest in 2001. Over the years, he served in multiple parishes across Kitui while also overseeing key administrative and development programs within the church.
Church observers say his appointment signals continuity and stability for the diocese following the transfer of Bishop Joseph Mwongela to Machakos earlier this year.
The Diocese of Kitui remains one of the Catholic Church’s influential regions in eastern Kenya, with a long history dating back to its establishment as a diocese in 1963.
