Relief for Thousands as KNEC Opens Online KCSE Certificate Downloads for KSh1,300

Thousands of former students across Kenya could finally gain access to their academic certificates after the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) introduced an online portal allowing candidates to download their KCSE and KCPE certificates digitally.

Under the new system, KCSE candidates who sat their examinations between 1994 and 2025 can access and download their certificates online after paying an access fee of KSh1,300. The move is expected to benefit many Kenyans whose certificates have remained inaccessible for years due to unpaid school fees or administrative challenges.

For years, the withholding of KCSE certificates by schools over outstanding balances has sparked national debate, with critics arguing that the practice locks thousands of young people out of employment, higher education and other opportunities that require proof of academic qualifications.

The introduction of the digital portal could mark a significant shift in how examination records are accessed in Kenya, reducing long queues, paperwork and delays that have frustrated former candidates seeking replacement or retrieval of their certificates.

However, questions remain over whether the KSh1,300 access fee will be affordable for all applicants, particularly unemployed youth and individuals from low-income households who have struggled to obtain their certificates for years.

Will the new online system finally end the long-standing certificate crisis facing many Kenyan students, or will cost and accessibility challenges continue to leave some learners behind? For thousands seeking jobs and educational opportunities, the answer could be life-changing.
