Turkana Bets on Digital Future as 850 Youth Enrolled in New Skills Programme

Turkana County has launched a new digital skills training programme targeting 850 young people, in a move aimed at expanding employment opportunities and equipping youth with skills needed in the modern digital economy.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to reduce unemployment and bridge the digital divide in one of Kenya’s most underserved regions. Officials say the programme will focus on practical skills such as computer literacy, online work, digital marketing, and basic tech entrepreneurship.

Supporters of the programme argue that investing in youth skills development is one of the most effective ways to drive long-term economic transformation, especially in counties where formal job opportunities remain limited. The training is expected to open doors to remote work and online income opportunities for participants.

However, questions remain about sustainability and long-term impact, with critics noting that many similar programmes in the past have struggled to transition trainees into actual employment or income-generating opportunities after completion.

County officials have maintained that the programme is part of a larger vision to position Turkana youth for participation in Kenya’s growing digital economy, including access to freelance platforms and emerging tech opportunities.

Will the new digital skills initiative mark a turning point for youth employment in Turkana, or will it become another short-term training programme with limited long-term impact? For many young people, the success of the programme will be measured by real opportunities after graduation.
