Fred Matiang'i, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary, has criticized the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) decisively. He expressed concern that the manner in which the commission had handled the Ol Kalou by-elections stood to threaten the people’s confidence in the country's electoral process as the country approaches the 2027 General Elections.
Matiang'i noted that the IEBC has been "walking the country towards a crisis," and that should the anomalies witnessed during the Ol Kalou by-elections remain unaddressed, they would reoccur in the General Elections.
"The IEBC has been walking this country towards a crisis. By the looks of everything they have done in Ol Kalou, they will do the same during the General Elections," Matiang’i asserted.
Indeed, the condemnation comes against a backdrop of a numbing outcry from leaders of the opposition concerning the management of elections by the commission, with calls for transparency and accountability in electoral processes.
Matiang’i expressed the need for the IEBC to remain true to its constitutional mandate by ensuring that all electoral processes are done in an open, transparent and lawful manner.
The IEBC has yet to reply publicly to Matiang'i's most recent statements. According to the commission, it has conducted all elections and by-elections in an unbiased manner in accordance with the Constitution and electoral laws.
As politics heat up even more, the debate on the Ol Kalou by-election is getting underway, and attention will focus on how the IEBC will deal with these concerns.
