The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has indicated that it may cancel the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election if its investigations prove credible accusations of vote-buying and other electoral misconduct.
The commission further disclosed that it came across reports of suspected vote-buying and warned candidates, political parties, and their backers against committing any act of intimidation or corruption and to influence voters via bribery.
IEBC re-emphasized its constitutional mandate to protect the conduct of elections and indicated its readiness to nullify the upcoming the Ol Kalou by-election should credible evidence emerge proving the elections are compromised.
The commission has asked the public to report any incidents of voter bribery/intimidation to election officials and law enforcement agencies while reassuring voters that their complaints will be investigated. The warnings have come at a time of escalated political tension because of the Ol Kalou by-election where the integrity of the electoral process has continued to be tested before the 2027 General Election.
The political leaders have been exchanging accusations of electoral misconduct, with certain opposition members claiming that the conduct of the by-election will be crucial to assess the autonomy and commitment of the IEBC towards the conduct of free elections.
Although the investigations are ongoing, the commission has assured the conduct of credible and lawful elections but has also warned that whoever is guilty of electoral offences will be accountable to the law.
The political situation in Ol Kalou by election is anticipated with some level of interest and will possibly affect public perception of the IEBC as preparations for the 2027 General Elections get underway.
