An audit report indicates that KANU, which had once been the dominant political force in Kenya, is now counted as one of the richest political parties in Kenya because of its ownership of land/buildings valued over ksh 10.15 billion.
The findings of this audit provide concrete evidence of the significant amount of land and/or buildings that have been acquired by KANU during its tenure as the leading political party in Kenya. These assets, including a variety of land and buildings located throughout Kenya, highlight KANU's vast wealth due to the accumulation of these assets over many years and through its continued ownership, even though KANU's political power has declined in recent years.
This continuing ownership of large amounts of land, as mentioned by the audit, shows that KANU has retained a significant amount of financial strength, regardless of any changes and/or declines in KANU's political fortunes.
The findings of the audit have sparked a debate regarding the economic power that political parties wield with respect to their financial resources, as well as the role that such long-term assets have in the economic climate within which political parties operate in Kenya.
Analysts note that KANU's property holdings place KANU at or near the top of all political parties in Kenya with respect to wealth, financial resources, and political stability, while almost all other new/refugee political parties cannot achieve a similar level of success and/or stability in the current political environment.
Additionally, the findings of this audit have additional support for calls for increasing the transparency and visibility associated with the governance of political party assets, especially since so many political party members are vying for the political power and resources available to those members from other political parties over the next election cycle.
Many people in Kenya look at the report as a wake-up call that political opportunities can come and go, but the institutions and resources developed over decades will outlast any one political party's time in office and affect the Kenyan political environment for future generations.
