New Middle East Flashpoint? Houthis Declare Loyalty to Iran's Supreme Leader

Defence‍‌‍‍‌ minister Mohammad Al-Atahi of the Houthi movement in Yemen has made it clear that their group is ready to obey ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, the ruling supreme leader of Iran, through this announcement that will presumably raise the fears regarding the spread of Iranian influence in the region.

Via Saba News Agency, the spokesperson of Houthi movement, Al-Atahi, stated that they will carry out any directive from the supreme leader of Iran, as a result of which, it becomes quite clear that their bond with Tehran is quite strong.

The release occurs during the period of Iran, Israel and US tensions, with growing fears that the fighting could be joined even by allied fighters of the two parties.

Houthis who are in charge of the north of Yemen, since the outbreak of hostility have kept sending missile and drone strikes to the Red Sea shipping lanes, which are also connected to Israel.

It should be noted to emphasize, the Houthi situation is different from that of Iranian, in a way that, Iran is not responsible for the Houthi actions directly, but the group does act independently. On the contrary, Western governments and quite a few Middle Eastern countries have continued accusing Iran of supplying the Houthi organization with arms, money and other forms of help.

Al-Atahi's revelations may be one of the reasons behind the rising international attention since this could, once again, validate the worries about the increasing cohesion of Iran's friends in the Middle East region even as the political situations remain unstable.

It is thought that the remark might be an obstacle to diplomatic work aimed at easing conflicts in the Middle East as several Iran-backed groups remain in Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon, ‍‌‍‍‌Syria.
