El Niño Warning: 18 Counties Now on High Alert

Kenya is getting ready for the coming El Niño rains. National and county leaders are putting disaster plans into action before the rainy season starts in October to December.

The government created a group called the Ad Hoc Cabinet Committee on El Niño Preparedness and Response. This group is led by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki. They were told to start a plan to deal with the situation.

Some counties are already working on their plans. Nakuru started a team to handle the situation. They are working on things like drainage mapping dangerous areas and planning how to respond to floods.

In Tana River officials found places that're at risk and started their plans. In Mandera they brought together groups, including charities and development groups to make the early-warning systems better. They are also looking for communities that might be in danger.

These steps are because of warnings from local weather experts. They say there is a chance of El Niño in 2026. In June the World Meteorological Organization said there was an 80% chance of El Niño from June to August. They also said there was a 90% chance the conditions would last until November.

The weather could mean rain than usual in parts of Kenya. This could cause flooding. Flooding could harm roads, farms, homes, health services and people’s jobs. Officials are saying it is important to give warnings get ready for floods protect people who are in danger and work together between the national and county governments.

Of waiting for the rains to start leaders are being told to use this time to get communities and infrastructure ready. The goal is to stop people from losing their lives from being forced to move and, from losing their homes when the heavy rains come.
