The political hemorrhaging from President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) shows no signs of stopping, as two sitting Members of County Assembly from Kiambu County have officially ditched the ruling party to join Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro's People's Party of Kenya (PPK).
The defections, announced on August 20, come barely two days after Nyoro himself dramatically severed ties with UDA and positioned himself firmly in the opposition, marking a significant escalation in the political realignment sweeping the Mt Kenya region.
The new entrants are Zack Macharia, the current MCA for Kiuu Ward, popularly known as Githurai 45, in Ruiru Constituency, and Winnie Wambui, a Kiambu County MCA. Both politicians have now formally abandoned the "Wheelbarrow party," as Nyoro has taken to calling his former political home, and thrown their weight behind his burgeoning political vehicle.
Nyoro welcomed the two defectors, describing their entry as an important step as PPK continues to build its presence in the vote-rich region. However, he has also issued a stark warning to other leaders eyeing his party, declaring that PPK will not provide political refuge for those who have insulted former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, incited violence, or engaged in political chaos. "If you are in the wheelbarrow party and you have been insulting leaders, if you have insulted former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, PPK has no room for you. Go and make amends with Gachagua," Nyoro stated.
The Kiharu MP further challenged leaders seeking to join PPK to reconcile with opposition figures such as Jubilee flagbearer Fred Matiang'i and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. The entry of Macharia and Wambui, combined with Nyoro's stringent conditions for membership, signals that PPK is positioning itself as a disciplined opposition force rather than a dumping ground for political opportunists, and the pressure on President Ruto's camp is only set to intensify as the 2027 elections draw nearer.
