The latest TIFA Research poll has painted a picture of a deeply fragmented and unpredictable 2027 presidential race, with President William Ruto leading the pack at 24% support among over 2,000 respondents.
While this places him ahead of his competitors, the figure also underscores a significant vulnerability: three in every four Kenyans currently prefer someone else or remain undecided, suggesting that the President's path to re-election is far from secure .
Behind Ruto, the opposition field is tightly clustered but divided, with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka emerging second at 19%, followed closely by former Interior CS Fred Matiang'i at 14%, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna at 10%, and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at 9% . This fragmentation, analysts warn, could ultimately work in Ruto's favor, as the absence of a clear front-runner among opposition ranks makes it difficult to consolidate the anti-incumbent vote .
The poll also reveals significant regional dynamics that will shape the contest. Ruto draws his strongest support from Northern Kenya at 48% and Nyanza at 41%, the latter a traditional ODM stronghold that the Broad-Based Government arrangement appears to have opened for him .
However, in Mt Kenya, his ancestral political backyard, he commands just 9%, with Gachagua recognized by 70% of Kikuyu respondents as their community's political leader . Meanwhile, Kalonzo dominates the Kamba community with 93% recognition, while Matiang'i leads among the Kisii at 83% .
The poll also shows a sharp decline in support for the Broad-Based Government arrangement, dropping from 44% in November 2025 to 30% in May 2026, with 56% of Kenyans now opposing the political cooperation between Ruto and the late Raila Odinga's camp .
As the 2027 election approaches, the challenge for the opposition remains clear: unite or risk handing Ruto a second term without a majority mandate.
