Why More Kenyans Are Choosing Business Over Employment

For years getting a steady job was seen as one of the ways to build a good life in Kenya.. That way of thinking is changing.

More and more Kenyans are choosing to start businesses work online sell things cook and sell food grow crops drive people around and do other kinds of work instead of only looking for regular jobs.

One reason is that finding a job is tough. Many people, those with college degrees spend months or years trying to find work.. When they do the jobs might not pay well or offer much room to grow.

Starting a business gives people something that jobs don't: control. A person who runs a business can decide what to sell how much to charge and how to make the business bigger. Even a small business can help earn money from customers instead of just one boss.

Digital tools have made it easier to start a business. Kenyans can now sell things on media use online stores offer their skills as freelancers or make videos without needing a physical store.

The cost of living is also going up. For some workers a salary that used to be enough is now not enough to pay for rent, food, transport and other things. This has made people look for ways to earn money and some have turned those extra jobs into full-time businesses.

Young Kenyans are also thinking differently about what it means to be successful. Owning a business being able to support themselves and helping others find work can seem appealing than spending years climbing the ladder at a big company.

Starting a business is not a simple way out of money problems. Businesses can fail. Money can. Go.. Business owners often work more hours than people who have regular jobs. Getting money to start a business dealing with competition paying taxes and keeping up with what customers want can all be hard.

For Kenyans the choice is not between working for someone or starting a business. It is, about having choices.
