Yusuf Hassan Switches Allegiance: From Jubilee to DCP as He Eyes 2027 Re-Election

Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan Abdi has officially ditched former President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee Party for the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, adding to the momentum of political realignment just months before the 2027 General Election

Hassan was formally welcomed into DCP on Tuesday at the party's Lavington headquarters, where he was handed a DCP cap by Gachagua and declared his intention to defend his seat under the new party while backing the former DP's presidential ambitions .

The veteran lawmaker, who has represented Kamukunji for over a decade and secured his fourth term in 2022 with 34,264 votes on a Jubilee ticket, justified his exit by pointing to the dissatisfaction among his constituents. "Kenyans are hurting because of the high cost of living, and corruption has increased. Kamukunji residents have said they are tired and cannot bear the burden of bad politics," he stated . He further described Gachagua as "a nationalist who loves Kenya," signaling his alignment with the former DP's growing political movement as they aim to unseat President William Ruto .

This defection is a strategic coup for Gachagua's DCP, giving the party a crucial foothold in Nairobi's most commercially strategic constituency, home to the bustling Eastleigh trading district . It also complicates the opposition unity narrative, as Gachagua's presidential ambitions are now directly challenging the dominance of Azimio affiliates in the capital

With DCP gaining ground, the 2027 race in Nairobi is shaping up to be a fierce contest.
