From Youth Voice to Continental Movement: The Journey of Eugene Oponyo

"I've always believed that young people should not just be part of the conversation—they should help shape it."

My name is Eugene Oponyo, and my journey has been driven by a passion for leadership, civic engagement, and empowering young people to take an active role in society.

Growing up, I witnessed many talented young people with great ideas but limited opportunities to make their voices heard. That reality inspired me to become involved in youth leadership and public discourse, advocating for greater participation of young people in decision-making processes.

Over time, what started as a commitment to youth empowerment grew into a larger vision. I founded Wazalendo Movement Africa with the belief that young Africans have the power to drive positive change in their communities and across the continent.

The path has not always been easy. Leadership comes with challenges, criticism, and moments of doubt. Yet every obstacle reinforced my conviction that meaningful change requires persistence, courage, and a willingness to serve others.

As a political commentator and youth advocate, I continue to engage in conversations that matter—encouraging accountability, leadership, and active citizenship among young people. My mission remains simple: to inspire a generation that is informed, engaged, and ready to lead.

Looking back, I have learned that impact is not measured by how loud your voice is, but by how many people you inspire to find theirs.

For every young person with a vision for their community, my message is clear: never underestimate the power of your ideas, your voice, and your ability to create change.
