Crypto for Influence? How Pakistan's Trump Bet Opened Doors in Washington

Pakistan’s recent agreement to participate in a cryptocurrency venture related to Donald Trump’s business has provided Pakistan access to the United states, potentially more valuable than any tokens.

Under the agreement, Pakistan is a participant in World Liberty Financial, President Trump’s cryptocurrency project which raised over 500 million USD via token sales. The project received broad international attention early on, with Pakistan being one of the earliest countries to publicly engage with the project since as one of the countries participating in Pakistan’s digital and electronic finance initiative is one of the financial contributors of the World Liberty Financial.

As was expected, the initial agreement was focused on exploring stablecoin technology and cross-border remittance payments; however, most experts agree that the diplomatic benefits will have far exceeded any monetary gain to Pakistan, as the agreement provided Pakistan with unprecedented access to some of the highest ranking officials within the Trump administration.

Coinciding with the initial agreement between Pakistan and the World Liberty Financial, there have been a number of high-level diplomatic engagements between Islamabad and Washington. Additionally, due to increased diplomatic activity between the two countries, there has been a noticeable warming of relations between the countries regarding regional security matters and other economic matters.

Critics of the arrangement have raised concerns regarding the potential for a blurring of lines between private business interests and foreign policy; supporters of the arrangement point out that throughout history nations have utilized their economic relationship with foreign countries to exert their influence upon them.

The agreement between Pakistan and World Liberty Financial illustrates the use of cryptocurrencies as an instrument of both financial gain and geopolitical strategy in the growing digital economy.

Has crypto become the new currency of diplomacy, or does the arrangement raise difficult questions about influence and access in international politics? For governments around the world, the answer could shape the future relationship between technology, business and global power.
