The government of Kenya has decided not to build a Nairobi–Mombasa Expressway as suggested by Everstrong Capital from the United States. Instead they will make the existing A8 Nairobi–Mombasa Highway better by turning it into a road with at least four lanes that people have to pay to use.
This change in plan was mentioned in a report by the Public-Private Partnerships Directorate. The government thinks it is better to fix the highway rather than build a new one next to it.
The new plan is to make the highway have least four lanes and people will have to pay to use it. This will help pay for the construction and maintenance of the road. The government is working with companies to make this happen.
The Nairobi–Mombasa Highway is very important for Kenya because it connects the capital city to the Port of Mombasa. Many people and goods use this road to travel. By making the road better the government hopes to reduce traffic make the road safer and help people get where they need to go
The government has also stopped working with Everstrong Capital on their proposal, for an expressway. They are now looking for a private company to help them make the highway better. They have already started getting bids from companies that can help them with this project.
The government has not said how much the project will cost or when it will be finished. They also have not said who the new private company will be or how much people will have to pay to use the road. They will announce these details later.
Making the highway better is part of Kenyas plan to improve its roads and help the economy grow. They want to make it easier for people and goods to move around the country and the rest of East Africa. The Nairobi–Mombasa Highway is a part of this plan.
