Ruto Unveils New Community Policing Plan to Tackle Nairobi's Rising Insecurity

President‍‌‍‍‌ Williams Ruto has introduced a fresh community policing framework which he thinks should be a part of the Nairobi policing plan as the three players, residents, National Police Service and county authorities, should work together to identify and confront threats.

According to the President, this framework aims at improving crime prevention by engaging the public more, enhancing intelligence flow and getting communities and law enforcement agencies to cooperate more intimately.

President Ruto, when he was unveiling the initiative, emphasized that sustainable security can really only be achieved if citizens are actively involved with the security agencies in identifying and responding to threats at the very place where they appear i.e., in the citizen neighborhood.

Under this new arrangement, it is anticipated that the collaboration between the local leaders will lead in organizing together a response team of police officers, community policing committee members, county officials to get faster in handling such incidents as robbery, street crimes.

President also pointed out that the programme will help to fight crime more effectively while at the same time making the life of business community and residential areas in the capital safe, which will eventually lead to a crime and violence free living environment, a vision that is also part of the larger plan of the government.

Governments believe that if the communities are made to get more involved then this could help the police force tackle criminal activities such as robbery, drug dealing, gang activity, and urban crime in general by motivating the citizens to report their suspicious findings.

Nairobi is still experiencing different security issues in a number of districts and the authorities believe that good policing will require both professional police service and the support of citizens.

Officials believe the revised community policing approach will not only make Nairobi safer but also hold the police more accountable through joint governance by the State and ‍‌‍‍‌citizens.
