Who Was Gen. Moses Ali? Uganda's Veteran Leader Dies at 87

Uganda‍‌‍‍‌ is in deep sorrow over the loss of General Moses Ali (Rtd), who passed away at the ripe age of 87.

An outstanding figure in Uganda history, Moses Ali held several senior positions in government, such as Deputy Prime Minister (Second) and remained a very influential national voice for over 50 years in political circles.

Moses Ali's roots lie in Uganda's West Nile region and it is there, at the end of 1970s, that he started receiving a lot of the attention. He came back to the world of work under Pres. Yoweri Museveni's government. His roles included the cabinet ones and at one time he was in charge of internal affairs, disaster preparedness and public service.

In different years, he has held numerous cabinet portfolios, including roles in public affairs, disaster preparedness and civil service, which he has made him known throughout the country as one of the best statesmen.

Throughout his distinguished career, he served as an integral part of Uganda's political and security sector, being one of the main figures in the government after the major changes in the political scene. His being a public figure for so long made him a name easily associated to the leadership in the country.

Besides politics, he was wellknown as an advocate of development programmes in his home area of West Nile, and as a mentor of young people leading.

As a MP, he has been a Parliament member for decades. Through the time he also championed many development activities in his community.

He has died and it is an end of an era for the Ugandan political class. It is very likely, though, that tributes to him will be made not just from President Museveni, the cabinet members and other state officials, but also from opposition leaders and from heads of states in the region.

Rewarding the fact that Moses Ali was one of the best servants of the Ugandan public and many are going through his life with a great respect. He will probably be remembered as a politician whose political journey was exactly the modern political story of the Nation itself - from military ranks and cabinet posts to parliamentary representation over decades.

Information on the arrangements of the funeral and state ceremonies will be made available to the public by the Ugandan Government within a few ‍‌‍‍‌days.
